Hailing from Fukushima, Rina Katahira is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter.
In her early indie days, she won the jury’s special award among 10,000 applicants at “Senko Riot 2011”, a rock festival for aspiring musicians. In 2012, she went on to be chosen as the first-signed artist of “Play You.Label”, under the umbrella of Sony’s “Walkman” product series. Her single “Hajimarini”, distributed online in January 2013, was chosen for heavy rotation on all six radio stations in the Tohoku Region, eventually gaining her #2 on the Recochoku Daily Chart, an extraordinary achievement for a newcomer. She performed 20 cities across the nation in April, in a tour entitled “Rina Katahira: Kazaranai Egao de Hikigatari Tour 2013”.
Rina made her major debut with single “Natsu no Yoru”, on August 7, 2013. The song was chosen for heavy rotation on 50 AM/FM/CS stations nationwide. Second single “Onnanoko wa Nakanai” was released on January 15, 2014 and debuted at #18 on the Oricon Weekly Ranking.
In the same month, she was invited by Gibson/Epiphone to perform at to “NAMM Show 2014” on January 25 in Anaheim, California, which turned out to be her first performance overseas. She has also since become the first Japanese female artist to be officially endorsed by the guitar brand, Epiphone.
She made a triumphant return to Japan and went on her first single-bill tour, performing in front of sold-out audiences in Tokyo, Osaka, and her hometown Fukushima. On April 30, 2014, Rina released her third single “Oh JANE / Anata”, followed by her second nationwide tour, performing only with her acoustic guitar in 23 cities. The sold-out final show, held as single-bill at Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan in Tokyo, was a totally unplugged show with no microphones and amplifiers.
Rina’s first album, “amazing sky,” was released on August 6, 2014. Although being a first full-length album of a new artist, it stayed in the top 10 of the Oricon Daily Ranking for three days in a row. It also debuted at #12 on Oricon’s Weekly Ranking.
In November 2014, she went on her second solo nationwide tour and performed in six cities (Tokyo / Nagoya / Osaka / Fukuoka / Sendai / Fukushima) including a show at the famed Ebisu Liquid Room.
